Practical answers for a full day on Maui’s North Shore.
Do nonresidents need a fishing license?
Hawaiʻi requires a recreational marine fishing license for nonresidents age 15 and older, subject to current DLNR exemptions. DLNR advises all nonresident charter passengers to have a license, even if they do not intend to fish. Review the current requirements before your trip.
Review current DLNR requirementsWhat should I bring?
Bring food, snacks, bottled water, and other nonalcoholic drinks. Rubber-soled shoes, shorts, sunglasses, a light shirt, and a hat are recommended. The water can feel cooler than shore, and sun exposure is stronger.
Can I bring my own tackle?
Yes. Guests may bring tackle, but Rainbow Runner supplies the fishing tackle needed for the charter.
What happens if the weather turns?
Captain Armelio makes the final trip or rescheduling decision based on conditions. North Shore seas can become rough, and the source guidance notes that trips are unlikely when winds rise above 20 mph.
Who decides what happens to the catch?
Captain Armelio makes final decisions about the catch, cleaning, and take-home fish. He will usually clean a reasonable amount for guests to take to their accommodations.
Is there a bathroom on board?
Yes. The Rainbow Runner has an onboard bathroom.
